WE ARE LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD HOMES!!

 CAN YOU HELP US?

The following dogs and puppies were pulled from a WV shelter, most on the day they were scheduled to be euthanized. (Yes even the 6 week old puppies have a time limit and are killed each week.) We are a small organization that is committed to helping all that we can, but even we have space restrictions. When you adopt from us, you save not only your new pet's life, but the life of a dog and/or puppy that is still sitting in the shelter that, until you freed up some space by adopting, we didn't have room to save.

If you would like to sponsor or foster one of our orphans, please contact us at jamie@akkennel.com or 301-582-3353. Any donation is accepted and put entirely towards the animals' care and vet requirements.

The shelter that we pull from is very hard working, but like us, they are fighting with space restrictions, and so they euthanize a lot of animals everyday. If you would like to take a look at who they have please visit http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/WV15.html , and then contact them to tell them about your interest and to find out any information they have on the animal. Occasionally we do transports to the Hagerstown, MD area, otherwise they are approximately 3 hours away.

For a list of other shelters in the area please scroll down to the bottom of this page.

Thank you and God Bless!

We have stopped using this webpage as our primary adoption page. If you would like to see a full listing of the animals we have for adoption please visit:

dogs

Flynn is a redbone coonhound mix, he turned 6 months old in Oct. He has LOTS of energy and will need someone to exercise him at least 2 hours per day, this is NOT an apartment dog or one that can be left for 12 hours per day. He should not go to a home with small children because he is liable to knock them down while trying to kiss their faces. He loves people and other dogs, but he is a very rough player, so he should not go to a home with older animals or young children. He will chase your cat, but only to play (and chew on it a bit). Flynn would benefit from a full course of obedience training and lots of attention and love, he will need to be owned by someone that is consistent and strong enough to control him until he understands the rules. He is crate trained and up to date on his shots, he was neutered a little bit ago and is ready to get to his forever home.

Flynn's adoption fee is $115

Jose is a 4-6 year old Red Border Collie. We shaved her down completely to treat her flea and tick bites. She came into the shelter as a stray and then let herself out of the yard at the WV shelter and became a stray again! Two days later she came trotting up to the front door of the WV shelter, looking for food and belly rubs. Josie is very affectionate and very active. She would do very well in endurance/obstacle and herding trials with some training and work. She is an extremely fast learner who already comes when called and sits for a treat and goes into her room on command, she came completely untrained and obviously neglected by her previous owner. We will not adopt her out to a home without a fenced in back yard that is at least 5 feet high, and we will need to inspect it to make sure she cannot escape or a way to exercise her at least two (2) hours per day; we will not budge on this requirement. She knows how to flip latches on gates especially, so precautions must be made that she does not escape and get hurt or killed. Josie does very well with all male dogs, but she tends to choose female companions that do not mind her energy level and does not get along with all females equally. She also loves to nip at other dogs' heels to herd them, so any dogs in the house will need to be tolerant of her collie behavior. Josie is very good with people, but would be too much for a little child, so no kids under 5 years of age. At this point we do not know if Josie is spayed or not, but she will have to be if she is not, before being adopted out.

Josie adoption fee is $115

Lowell is a white husky with one blue eye and one brown. He is very sweet and good with any and all dogs. We are not sure about cats, but given a husky's instinct we are going to say 'no' but we are willing to try. Right now he is shaved completely down and looks horrible because he came in with such advanced flea dermatitis and infected tick bites. His time at the shelter had come up two weeks before we got to him, but the staff "hid" him out back tied to a building to save his life because he was so nice. The day the state man came and told them to put him to sleep we picked him up, so God is watching over our boy Lowell!

We are not sure about his age, but we are estimating 5 years old looking at his teeth and his temperament, this could be a couple of years off either way given the level of malnutrition that he has been in his entire life, but we have no way of telling. He is a sweet boy with people and kids, he loves to give tiny little kisses on your face while you pet his head and cuddle him. Lowell will go to a home that has at LEAST a 5 foot fence that he cannot jump/climb. This is a precaution due to our experience with Huskies in the past, he has not jumped or climbed any of our fences here, but we do not want him to get lost, hurt, or killed because the fence was too low, we love he too much.

Lowell does not have an adopt donation set yet, but if you would like to donate to his medical bills please send a check to Jamie Garcia at 17826 Lappans Rd, Fairplay, MD 21733 and put "Lowell" in the memo line, this will help to lower his adoption fee for potential adopters.

UPDATE: Lowell was neutered on 11/11/08 and is doing well, he has lots of energy but when he comes in he loves to sleep. Lowell is working on his manners and housebreaking now. Please consider donating to Lowell's vet bills, we have now put over $300 towards his vet bills and we know we will not be able to ask that as an adoption fee, so the rescue will have to absorb it.

COURTESY POSTINGS:

Please contact us for an application, we will then pass it on to the foster mom who will perform the necessary checks for you to adopt from her.

Band of Brother

(There are only 9 puppies, just too many cute pictures to choose from!)

 -All male
-6wks old (will be ready to go beginning of Oct)
 -Hound/Whippet mixes
-Might get to 40-50 lbs?, about 5-6 lbs now,
-All will come up-to-date on vaccines for their age (1st distemper 7 way, dewormed at least once, and frontline for ticks and fleas)
-They will need to neutered by their 6 month birthday, no exceptions.
-They LOVE people and other pets (both cats and dogs)

We call them the "Band of Brothers" due to all of them being boys! So of course all of their names came from the movie, see below:
Black and White pups: Luger, Patton, Tank
Brown and White pups: Sink, Buck, Hank, Leach (which is the runt), Muck, Nixon

The runt, Leach, was born with a deformed front paw but is now using it. He might not be able to leave at 8 weeks old due to his size, only 2 1/2 lbs, so anyone interested should contact us to discuss his progress.

The adoption fee for each puppy is $50

Lizzie Bell

She is the mother of the Band of Brothers, we are guessing she is a Hound/Whippet mix from her personality and looks, but we are not completely sure since she was dumped at the shelter with no info on her. Lizzie is very nervous at first, especially around men, so she will need an understanding owner to help her gain confidence in the world around her. She is very affectionate once she gets to know you and will make a great pet for a calm, gentle family/household. Lizzie is still housebreaking, but she only has an accident in the house about once per week, so she is well on her way.

Lizzie Bell's adoption fee is $115

CATS

Eshe

Very small, grey and silver diluted Tabby. She is very friendly and very quiet, perfect lap cat! Eshe would do best in a calm household where she would get lots of attention, but she is very good with other cats, kids, and dogs. She will run if scared, but only to hide until the storm passes. Eshe must be an indoor only cat, she will be spayed and brought up-to-date on her shots before being adopted.

Eshe's adoption fee is $75

Eleanor (aka Ellie)

Dark striped Tabby. Ellie is very sweet but very nervous around people and other animals until she gets to know them. She does not protest being picked up and held and relaxes if stroked softly.. Ellie will need a calm and understanding family, that will let her get use to them in her own time. Eleanor must be an indoor only cat, she will be spayed and brought up-to-date on her shots before being adopted.

Eleanor's adoption fee is $75
